In Bali, you will find all kind of delicious dishes. In the tourist areas, you can find a lot of western food and healthy cafes with the famous smoothie bowls and avocado egg breads.
They are for sure really good.
But this is not really the traditional Indonesian food.
And you also have to try some local food on your trip to Bali.

So where can you find the traditional Indonesian food and what is it?

Around at the streets, you will find small Warungs, motorbikes that are driving around, small stalls, markets and night markets where it is possible to by Balinese food.

The main raw-material in almost all the Balinese dishes is rice. The local people eat rice with almost everything and eat it also for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A few of the most famous and popular street foods and dishes you find in the local warungs are:

Nasi-Goreng, fried rice with vegetable, egg and usually chicken (ayam in Indonesian)

Mie Goreng -fried noodles with vegetables, egg and usually also chicken

Nasi campur, comes with rice and then you can choose your own fillings from the showcase. They usually have different kinds of vegetables, tofu, tempe, chicken, fish,different meets, eggs… so something for everyone. And it is easy to eat this if you are a vegetarian or vegan.

Bakso, isan Indonesian meatball, usually it is served as a soup with noodles.

Sate,a skewer with grilled meat of usually chicken or lamb, served with peanut sauce.

Sambal,a hot chili sauce or paste that is served with almost all of the Indonesian dishes.

We want to share the recipe for the most famous dish, Nasi Goreng.

1 cup uncooked rice

2 cups water

3 eggs

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 onion, chopped

1 leek, chopped

1 clove garlic,minced

2 green chili peppers, chopped

½ pound cut chicken breasts

1 teaspoon ground coriander

1 teaspoon ground cumin

3 tablespoon sweet soy sauce (Indonesian kecap manis)

  1. Bring the rice and water to a boil in a saucepan over high heat. Reduce heat to medium low, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender, and the liquid has been absorbed, 20 to 25 minutes. Spread onto a baking sheet, and refrigerate 2 hours until cold.

 

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Pour eggs into hot skillet. Cook until the eggs begin to set, lifting up the edges of the set eggs to allow the uncooked egg to contact the hot pan, about 1 minute. Flip omelet in one piece and cook until fully set, about 30 seconds. Slice omelet into ½ inch strips.

 

  1. Heat the vegetables oil in a large pan over high heat. Stir in the onion, leek, garlic and chili peppers. Cook,stirring until onion is soft. Stir in the chicken,coriander and cumin, mix well. Cook and stir for approximately 5 minutes.

 

  1. Mix in the cold rice, sweet soy sauce, and omelet strips, cook until the chicken is no longer pink inside.
