Bali and Sri Lanka, two tropical islands in Southeast Asia. They both attract travellers and surfers worldwide with their incredible beaches, surf spots, cultures, lifestyles, and rich histories. While Bali has long been popular for backpackers, surfers, and show horses, Sri Lanka has recently gained a more hip and happening status.
Both islands offer unforgettable experiences and great destinations for a surf trip, but they have distinct characteristics that set them apart. With different Kima Surf Camps in both locations, two in Bali (Seminyak and Canggu) and two in Sri Lanka (Weligama and Hiriketiya), it's helpful to know the differences between these paradises. Surfing is the way, and we're here to get you in the water, so let's go!
Bali has long been renowned as a world-class surfing destination. This Indonesian island offers a variety of consistent waves in different sizes. The surf community and culture are also a significant part of Bali, and you'll encounter surfers of all kinds wherever you go. Popular surf spots in Bali include Uluwatu, Kuta, Canggu, and Medewi.
Bali's surf spots offer a wide range of options, from sandy beaches to reef breaks and semi-reefs, suitable to surfers of all levels, from beginners learning to surf to professional surfers competing in the WSL (World Surfing League). With two seasons, the rainy season and the dry season, and both the west and east coasts catching different swells, Bali is a year-round surf trip destination.
Both of our surf camps embody the Bali surf vibe. Our smaller camp in Seminyak, with its family-like atmosphere, is perfect for surrounding yourself with like-minded people by the pools or in the lounge area. Start or continue your surf journey and enjoy all the social activities. Our camp in Canggu offers a luxurious environment with all the modern amenities you need, including three pools, a climbing wall, a surf skate area, and a large open yoga shala and gym. It's the perfect place to enjoy everything Canggu has to offer while surfing the waves at Bali's surf spots.

While not as widely recognised as Bali yet, Sri Lanka offers excellent surfing opportunities for surf enthusiasts and has already gained significant popularity in recent years. The southern and southwestern coasts, with popular surf spots like Weligama, Mirissa, and Arugam Bay, are particularly known for their surfing.
Variety is the keyword for surfing in Sri Lanka, with different kinds of surf breaks including reef breaks, beach breaks, and point breaks, making it a diverse destination for surfers. The waves in Sri Lanka tend to be a bit mellower than in Bali, making it an ideal location for beginners. However, Sri Lanka also has great spots for intermediate and advanced surfers, such as Mirissa and Arugam Bay.
If you're a beginner, consider also joining our 5-day Learn to Surf school in Sri Lanka. Our experienced surf guides will guide you through all the fundamentals and skills for surfing, helping you progress at your own pace and start your surf journey on the best foot.
Sri Lanka can also be divided into two seasons: Maha (November to April) and Yala (May to October). From November to April, the best surfing area is the southwest coastline, which enjoys 330 days of sunshine per year. During the monsoon on the west coast, the other side of the island remains dry, allowing you to find sun and waves year-round.

Bali is predominantly Hindu, with over 80% of the population practising the religion. It is renowned for its magical and colourful temples, interesting ceremonies, traditions, and beliefs. You can find the island's unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist, and indigenous influences in its architecture, music, and dance. Balinese people are known for their kindness and love of arts, crafts, music, dance, and theatre. They have numerous traditional dances, including the Kecak dance and the Legong dance.
The Balinese live by the concept of ‘tri hita karana’, which translates to "three causes of well-being," and is central to Balinese philosophy. It shows the importance of harmony between humans, gods, and nature.
Bali is a foodie's paradise, with a rich culinary history, and a wide range of delicious traditional dishes to try.
Beyond surfing and delicious food, you can join our different cultural day trips. Discover Bali’s waterfalls and beautiful temples, visit a coffee plantation, hike up Mount Batur or enjoy a fun day in Bali's rice fields!

Sri Lanka is predominantly Buddhist, with a minority of Muslims, Hindus, and Christians. Buddhism has shaped Sri Lanka's culture, art, and architecture for a long time. The island is home to numerous Buddhist temples, called ‘viharas’, which are places of worship and meditation.
Their culture is also influenced by its colonial history, with Indian, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences in the past. You can find this in architecture, cuisine, and language, as well as in our Camp in Weligama, which is located in a colonial homestead. The island's diverse ethnic groups, including Sinhalese, Tamils, and Moors, have contributed to its rich cultural tapestry. It’s a multicultural society, and therefore you can find a lot of cultural and festive events taking place around the island.
Experience the rich cultural heritage and beautiful nature of Sri Lanka during cultural trips with Kima! Visit the sweetest animals during a trip to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, and be at one with Sri Lanka's wildlife in Udawalawe National Park or Yala National Park.

For those seeking adventure beyond surfing, Bali offers various thrilling activities, such as snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, hiking up Mount Batur, or crossing the coast or jungle on a dirt bike.
Bali is also known for its vibrant nightlife, festivals, and luxurious resorts. The bustling streets of Seminyak, Canggu, and Kuta offer a wide range of Western bars, clubs, and restaurants where you can dance the night away with newfound friends.

The coastal regions, particularly in the south, have experienced significant development in recent years. Tourists can find a range of amenities, including Western-inspired cafes, shopping spots, and medical clinics. Larger cities like Colombo offer even more modern conveniences, such as shopping malls and cinemas.
You can find the island's diverse cultural landscape in its ancient ruins, including the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, UNESCO World Heritage, different colourful festivals, and delicious local cuisine.

We welcome you all year round in all our camps! Let’s take a look at the differences between our camps in Bali and our camps in Sri Lanka.
Our surf camp in Seminyak is the first camp that Kima opened around 20 years ago. It’s a little tropical oasis with authentic Bali flair wherever you look. It comes with different dormitories, twin and double rooms and two luxurious suites. The camp features a natural stone pool surrounded by palm trees, providing the perfect tropical atmosphere to relax with other guests. Located within a short walk of many gentle beach breaks and our Surf School, where our Learn-to-Surf Program (LTS) takes place, advanced breaks are a short van ride away.

Our bigger Bali camp in Canggu is more like a surf, yoga, and fitness resort. Located in the heart of some of the best surf spots and popular places for dining or nightlife in Bali, our Canggu camp offers high modern standards in a modern island lifestyle design with spacious chillout areas and hammocks. With three pools, a diving tower, a 15-metre high Climbing Wall, and a fully equipped 400-square-metre gym/yoga shala with ocean views and a surf skate area, this is the place for travellers seeking more luxury.

Our socially buzzing Weligama Camp welcomes you with a large tropical garden, a pool and a lounge area to enjoy the sun and hang around. We have a wide collection of room types available ranging from cosy double or twin bedrooms to stylish dorms and our luxurious 1 bedroom villa with all the Western amenities. Another highlight of our Weligama Camp is our brand-new ice bath, the perfect way to cool down and recover after a long day of surfing.
Just a short walk away, you can reach Weligama Bay or other beautiful, more advanced surf spots after a short Tuk Tuk ride. While the surf breaks in front of the camp can be unpredictable during the low season, they are particularly good for beginners during the Maha and Yala Seasons.

Our Hiriketiya Camp is located on the far southern edge of Sri Lanka. It’s less affected by the weather and a bit more reliable than Weligama. Therefore it is the perfect place to stay during the Yala Season.
Nestled amidst lush greenery, our camp features a refreshing pool, a spacious open-air fitness area, and traditional Sri Lankan cabanas for a cosy, romantic and authentic stay.
Nearby, the famous Hiriketiya Bay offers two breaks at one beach: from a heavy reef to a mellow beach break with perfect waves for beginners and intermediates. This smaller camp is ideal for a romantic getaway or a quieter retreat.

The choice between Bali and Sri Lanka ultimately depends on your preferences and travel style. Bali offers a more developed tourist infrastructure, with a wider range of accommodations, dining options, and activities. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, provides a more authentic and off-the-beaten-path experience.
If you're a dedicated surfer seeking consistent waves and a vibrant surf culture, Bali is the ideal destination. If you're looking for a blend of surfing, adventure, cultural immersion, and wildlife encounters, Sri Lanka might be the better choice.
No matter which island you choose, both Bali and Sri Lanka will offer you the unforgettable surf experience you're looking for! And in all of our camps, you'll get the Kima experience within the Kima Package. Two daily surf sessions from professional surf guides, daily yoga classes, video sessions and surf theory classes.
