Indonesian Independence Day 2023
Indonesia and especially Bali is known for one of the best waves in the world but also for its rich cultural diversity with many traditions. On August 17th 2023, Indonesia is celebrating its 78th Independence Day. This day holds immense significance for Indonesians as it marks the end of colonial rule and the birth of a sovereign nation.

The History of the Indonesian Independence Day
The story of Indonesian Independence Day dates back to 1945 when Indonesia became independent after being under both Dutch and Japanese colonialism.
In the 16th century, the Portuguese conquered parts of Indonesia that were ousted by the Dutch, who began colonizing the islands in the early 17th century and established Dutch colonial rule across today’s Indonesian state in the early 20th century.
From 1942 to 1945, during World War II, Japan occupied many parts of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. In August 1945, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were devastated by the atomic bomb dropped by the United States. As a result, Japan was forced to surrender, which marked the end of World War II and became one of the important events for Indonesia to be declared independent.
After long negotiations, on August 17, 1945, the proclamation of Indonesian Independence was read by Soekarno, accompanied by Mohammad Hatta, who later was elected as the president and vice president of Indonesia. The red and white Indonesian flag was raised, symbolizing the birth of a new era and Indonesia officially got its independence.
The Festivities of August 17th
As the days draw closer to August 17th, cities and villages are getting decorated with banners, lights, patriotic displays and shades of red and white, the colours of the national flag, to create an atmosphere of unity and anticipation. Schools, universities, community centres and households are organizing events and competitions to celebrate the nation’s independence.
One of the most iconic traditions is the flag-raising ceremony, called "Upacara Bendera” when the national flag is raised while the national anthem “Indonesia Raya” resonates through the air. This ceremony is led by the President and Vice President and attended by the cabinet, military brass, diplomatic corps and honoured guests. High School students from throughout the archipelago put on a marching show of intricate steps and turn to hoist the flag.
While the flag-raising ceremony is taking place, people gear up for traditional games and friendly competition that harken back to the nation's roots. One of the most popular games is the "Panjat Pinang", where a palm trunk, greased with a mixture of clay and oil, is erected in a public area. People have to try to climb to the top to win some prizes that are hung there. Other ones are joining Krupuk eating contests, and races like sack hopping and the women are participating in cooking contests to see who can make the biggest Krupuk. A good time is had by all, especially the crowd watching the games.
Of course, a genuine Indonesian celebration isn’t complete without cultural performances like traditional Balinese dances, music, and art forms. These performances fill the festivities with a joyful spirit and pay homage to the country’s cultural heritage.
On the Indonesian Independence Day the streets also come alive with one food stall after the other offering traditional Indonesian cuisine. From Nasi Goreng to rendang, a flavorful beef stew, to traditional snacks.
