Kima Surf Empowers Kids with Waves of Joy!
Bali, also known as the Island of Gods, is renowned among surfers worldwide. There is no better way to express our appreciation for this place than by giving back to its wonderful community! Kima Surf chose to show gratitude to the local community by empowering children from the Bali Orphan Day Centre with the opportunity to learn how to surf with help from our talented surf guides who are usually offering our Learn To Surf Program (LTS) to our guests.
This initiative not only aims to create waves of joy and surfing smiles but it also seeks to educate the kids through developing their passion for surfing, potentially paving the way to a career as a surf guide, which is a high demand profession here in Bali. This initiative aims to create the perfect balance between fun and education for the local kids.
About the Bali Orphan Day Center
Here at Kima Surf, we are so grateful to share the beautiful waves that Bali has to offer with people from around the world. But we value prioritising respect for the land and its people. Hence, we continually seek opportunities to support and initiate projects that give back to those who need it.
Over the years, there has been a trend of increasing numbers of orphanages in Bali. There are currently 78 orphanages in Bali, housing several thousands of children. Many kids are here because their parents are simply too poor to house them.
The Bali Orphan Day Centre is situated in the village of Nyuh Kuning, in Ubud. It is an educational day training centre which was established to nurture children who have suffered the loss of one or both parents. The ultimate aim of the centre is to empower and equip these Balinese orphans for a better life both now and in the future whereby their dream of a full secondary education will become a reality. Mama Ayu is currently the director and mother to a hundred orphaned children and her mission has been to enable these children to learn English, music, cooking, yoga, traditional dancing and many other skills to fully equip them to live a happy and independent life despite all that happened in their past.
The Initiative: Empowering local kids through surfing
Kima Surf teamed up with the Bali Orphan Day Center and organized organized a special surf day teaching surfing to 15 children. The one-hour session was led by 8 of our experienced Learn to Surf (LTS) guides, the day was packed with fun as the children learnt essential skills like paddling and surfing techniques both in theory and practice. The teaching method followed our Learn to Surf program, as this program is known for its effectiveness in introducing beginners to surfing.

BOOK NOWThe day started at the beach with a fun warm-up, then followed by a theory class outside of the water, where the kids were educated about surfing equipment, the basic skills they will have to learn, and, most importantly, the main surfing etiquette. Then, they learnt how to stand up (pop-up) on their boards outside of the water. Followed by some "dry" pop-up drills, aimed at developing some muscle memory for the pop-up. Finally, the kids entered the water waist-deep, each with an instructor by their side where they were motivated to catch their first waves!
The children amazed us by successfully catching waves and enjoying some long rides! Each child caught an average of 5-10 waves and had an unforgettable time. This initiative was a success and we are excited to see what the future holds for these young surfers! We are so grateful to establish and grow a bond with the local community through a shared passion for surfing. We thrive to promote waves of joy and surfing smiles for the lively community that we are a part of here in Bali!
Our Future Vision
Growing a strong connection with the local community through our shared love for surfing is important to Kima Surf. To uphold this relationship, we will continue organizing monthly surf days with the children. We're inviting our Kima guests to join us at these future events, encouraging them to contribute to and connect with the community they're visiting. We believe in the more, the merrier!
We are super enthusiastic about our ongoing initiatives and charities, and we are constantly looking for more opportunities to support and initiate projects that benefit those in need.
