The best surf spots in Bali

Located on the west coast at Seminyak beach you can reach our absolute beginner spot Gado-Gado within a few minutes walking from Kima Surf Seminyak. After or during our Learn-to-Surf Program, the white-water waves at Gado-Gado offer the perfect conditions to reinforce your basic skills.

Known for its consistent and long waves, that are easy to navigate Kuta Beach is one of Bali’s most popular surf spots for beginner surfers. It’s not a long paddle from the shore and the waves are mostly soft from waist to knee high. Breaking all along the 2 kilometres long sandy coastline, Kuta Beach offers enough space for everyone to spread out. Beginner surfers can feel comfortable here.

A classic reef break and a good location to try surfing your first reef break. Old Man’s is a popular spot for beginners, intermediates and also longboarders caused by mostly mellow, peeling long and fat waves that are gentle and predictable, right and left-handed. An unpleasant side effect: on good days you can expect a full lineup, so watch out and never forget the surf etiquette!

While the right will tend to close out on bigger swells, the left can offer powerful sections and even a few barrels sometimes and Old Man’s is becoming a surf spot for more intermediate surfers.

Spots like Batu Bolong and Batu Bolong Temple are just next to Old Man’s. Therefore this area provides many possibilities for everyone. The best thing? From our Surf camp in Canggu, you just walk a few minutes down to Old Man’s surf spot.

Located between our camps in Seminyak and Canggu, you’ll reach Berawa after a short drive from around 20 minutes. Berawa is a beach break with waves that are a bit sloppier, lefts and rights, but much less powerful than Old Man’s. Therefore it is the perfect spot to make the next step and still very good for learning surfing.

This spot is one of the best places to surf during Bali’s wet season. Depending on the conditions and the swell, beginner surfers and high intermediate can surf Serangan. It is one of the surf spots you have to enter by boat. At Kima, we have our own boats that bring you to the outer reefs. These boat trips are included in your stay. Serangan’s powerful waves, both lefts and rights as well as its beautiful location make it a spot you just can love!

Ready for one of the longest rides on the island? Then you should not think twice and go to Medewi! Even though the drive to Medewi Beach will take you around 2-3 hours from our Surf camps, it’s more than worth it! Due to its distance from other popular surf spots, it is a bit secluded and in general not crowded at all. The beach is beautiful and rocky, with sharp reefs that add to the challenge of the waves. Especially goofy footer’s got their money’s worth here while surfing the steep, long, left-handed waves.

Located on the southwest coast you can find another stunning surf spot for beginners and intermediates: Balangan Beach. On a higher tide and small swell the waves are mellow and suitable for beginner surfers. As soon as the swell gets bigger and the tide lower it is the more experienced surfers that only surf here. Fast-breaking and steep left-handers offer a great challenge for the intermediates. The bay at Balangan is still kind of untouched. The picturesque beach and the many local warungs provide an idyllic location and the feeling of the true surfing culture. So even if the swell gets too big for the beginners, they can just enjoy the sun over here and watch the pros in the lineup.

Nusa Dua, situated on Bali's east coast, is not only a stunning resort area with pristine white sandy beaches, but also a prime surfing destination, especially during the wet season. With its consistent right-hand reef break, Nusa Dua attracts surfers of all levels, offering a variety of waves that break at different tides and conditions. It's a swell magnet, often producing waves larger than they appear from the beach. Even when the swell is small, experienced surfers can enjoy long and powerful right-handers, making it an ideal spot during the off-season. Be prepared for strong currents, particularly on higher tides, as paddling is crucial to avoid getting caught inside with fatigued arms.

Even if you are not a pro surfer yet, you might already hear about Padang Padang. It’s THE famous surf spot on the island and is also considered one of the best spots for left-handers in the world. If you want to watch some professional surfers, you are at the right spot! Especially during the Rip Curl Cup, a popular surf competition in Bali. The long, hollow and step waves break over a sharp and shallow section of reef and can reach between 5 to 12 feet, making it a challenge even for experienced surfers but also providing barrel perfection. A good day at Padang Padang could be the barrel of a lifetime!
