The main islands include Siberut, Sipura, North Pagai, and South Pagai.

The Mentawai people's lives are tightly connected with nature, and their beliefs are deeply rooted in animism. Central to their spirituality is the concept of Arat Sabulungan, which can be translated as “religion of leaves''. They believe that the forest is the abode of ancestral spirits. Here are some renowned surf spots that make the Mentawais a surfer's paradise:

1. Macaronis

Known as the "Macaronis Resort," in South Sipora, this spot boasts one of the most consistent and perfect left-handers globally, surrounded by lush rainforests. It's a long, barreling left suitable for surfers of all skill levels. The further you paddle to the point, the faster you get barreled when you take off.

2. Telescopes

Home to Telescopes, a jewel of a wave, North Sipora offers a variety of lefts and rights, less crowded than the neighbouring breaks. It features long, perfect, barrelling lefts and is recommended for intermediate to advanced surfers. This spot is also made famous by the 90’s Young Guns 2 movie with Kelly Slater and Co.

3. Lance’s Right

Lance’s Right, also called HT's in South Sipora is recognized as one of the best and most consistent fast, barreling right-handers in the world, it is set in an idyllic bay and a perfect spot for photo- and videographers. It has fast, barreling rights and is suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. The inside is often referred to as ‘the surgeon's table’, because of the shallow parts.

4. Playground Left

Playground Left offers a long, easy left ideal for longboarders and beginners. When the swell is up, a right-hander splits off the peak. Expect smooth, predictable lefts during mid-tide, staying below chest high. Accessible by boat or a leisurely paddle from Karangmajat Island, it provides a haven from open ocean swells and an escape from the crowds at nearby 4 Bobs.

5. Beng Bengs

Beng Bengs is the perfect spot for easing into Mentawais surf scene. Nestled in scenic tranquility and protected from southerly winds, Beng Bengs is a reliable long lefthander which breaks over deep and forgiving reef and provides super fun surfing conditions whether the waves are big or small and offers both down-the-line and top-to-bottom hits.

6. Hideaways

Hideaways offers a diverse range of wave types, from fast barrels to bowly sections perfect for practice. Advanced surfers can challenge themselves on the long, deep barrels over shallow reef, while less experienced riders can enjoy a mellower wave further down the lineup. Known for its clean, gnarly breaks, Hideaways features hollow barrels and steep shoulders ideal for expert surfers. Keep an eye on the forecast for optimal conditions, but beware of shallow coral heads during low tide. Intermediate surfers should exercise caution, while beginners may want to explore other spots.

Getting there - an Adventure itself!

Reaching this remote paradise requires a bit of an adventure. The primary gateway to the Mentawais is through the provincial capital, Padang, in West Sumatra. From Padang, a thrilling boat journey awaits, taking you through the Indian Ocean to the Mentawai Islands. The boat trip itself is a big part of the Mentawai experience, offering you stunning views, seascapes and a hint of the region's beauty.

Are you staying in Bali? There are no direct flights to The Mentawais yet. A common route involves flying to Padang and then embarking on the boat journey to the Mentawai Islands. Travellers can also explore flight options from Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or other major Indonesian cities to reach Padang.
