Kima Surf‘s custom-built Six-Star Session Planner was built and refined over 25 years of surf coaching and guiding experience in Bali and Indonesia. Now you can assess your surfing level before you arrive at our surf camp and progress more quickly when you are at the camp.
Here are our KIMA Star Levels explained. Your safety in the water is paramount to us, so courses at KIMA have six levels, matching your surfing level to the conditions in different locations around the camp – from 1 star (a beginner) to 6 stars (an advanced level).
Now, you can check out the requirements for each level. If you find something that describes you, it’s likely your current level.
(1 star level)
Requirements to join:
- • You had completed Kima Learn To Surf course
- • You have previous basic surf experience
- • You had attended Kima surf theory training
Session goals:
- Taking off in white water waves
- Correct pop-up, stance, and position
- Keeping balance
- Learning to paddle surfboard
The 1-star sessions are available for those who just finished the Learn To Surf course or are still on it. The main goal is to keep working on the basic skills that every beginner surfer needs to improve: balance, paddling, pop-up, and stance. During the 1-star sessions, you will still be surfing only white water waves under the supervision of the instructors

Requirements to join:
- • You have achieved 1-star targets
- • You are comfortable in deep water
- • You have basic paddling skills
- • You can give paddle resistance
Session goals:
- Improve your paddling technique
- Practice turtle roll
- Catch green waves without a push
- Improve your balance on the surfboard
- Learn to surf in both directions
The 2 stars sessions are available for those who already feel more comfortable with the basics skills and are ready to go for the next level: paddling out to the line-up to catch green waves. During these sessions, the instructor will still push you into the waves and more focus will be given to improving your paddling resistance and technique, timing, balance, and learning how to ride the wave in both directions.

Requirements to join:
- • You have achieved 2 stars targets
- • You are ready for reef breaks
- • You can perform a successful turtle roll
- • You have intermediate paddle skill
- • You can catch waves without a push
- • You can surf in both directions
- • You are comfortable riding a hardboard
Session goals:
- Paddle to line up with ease
- Practice the duck dive
- Catch green waves with a push
- Learn to trim across the wave
- Reading the waves and line up
The 3 stars sessions are for those surfers who feel comfortable enough to paddle to the line-up and catch green waves alone (without being pushed by the instructor). Skills such as paddling, pop up and turtle roll are performed with more confidence. With your instructor, you will be working on your timing to catch the waves at the right moment and improve your reading of the wave, and you also should be riding a hard board to join the session.

Requirements to join:
- • You have achieved 3 stars targets
- • You can duck dive confidently
- • You don't need a push
- • You can surf in both directions
Session goals:
- Generating speed and flow
- Learn to top & bottom turn
- Link turns & learn maneuvers
The 4 stars sessions are available for intermediate surfers that already feel more independent in the water. You can make your own decisions and you already have a good understanding of how the ocean and surf spots work. At this level, you will be working on your speed and flow, and also on more technical maneuvers.

Requirements to join:
- • You have achieved 4-star targets
- • You are comfortable riding a shortboard
- • You can fall safely on reefs
- • You can compete for waves
Session goals:
- Improve your spot knowledge
- Tube riding/positioning
- Link major maneuvers
- Surfing waves of consequence
5 starts sessions are for advanced surfers who are seeking to improve their technical skills and take their surfing high above. You should be able to comfortably surf in crowded surf spots, and compete for the waves. More attention will be given to skills such as tube riding and positioning and learning how to surf more challenging waves.
The best area to surf: BUKIT
BOOK NOW(6 star level)
Requirements to join:
- • 5-star targets achieved
- • You can surf in all conditions
- • You are independent in the water
- • You can tube ride in both directions
Session goals:
- Improve the style and flow
- Perfect tube: riding & positioning
- Learn aerial techniques
- Perfect spot knowledge
A 6 stars session is the highest level you can get at Kima. These sessions are only available for advanced and skilled surfers who feel independent in the water and can surf waves of all sorts and difficulties without assistance. At this point, together with your instructor, you will be working on improving small details in your style and flow. You will also learn more about the surf spots and high technical maneuvers, such as aerials.
