Surf spots in Uluwatu

Uluwatu’s 5 main Peaks

Uluwatu is the surfer’s mecca in Bali because it has the unique ability to handle many different swell sizes. Uluwatu is a wide reef, with many sandy beaches lining the stunning limestone cliffs. Uluwatu's Surf Spots are made up from 5 different peaks that work at different tides and offering rides that stretch up to 300 meters or more! The 5 peaks are all left hander waves breaking along the reefs, however there are some variations in the spots that emerge from different swell and swell sizes. Let’s explore the 5 peaks that make up Uluwatu’s Surf Spots.

HAZARDS TO BE AWARE OF:

HAZARDS TO BE AWARE OF:

CROWDS
Uluwatu's Surf spots are good with handling big swells, the peak is steep, the reef is sharp and often during big swells you can find barrels being produced, therefore making these 5 peaks a hustling surf spot for experienced and seasoned surfers. The line up is also often very crowded due to the popularity of these waves. Therefore, it is very important when surfing here to be patient and practice excellent surf etiquette.
SAFETY
Entering and exciting the water can be rather tricky at surf spots in Uluwatu due to the shallow and sharp reefs at low tide and the strong currents. Watch out for the reef when entering at low tide and watch out for the waves pounding the cliff faces at a higher tide.
ENTRY
To safely enter the surf, avoid getting caught in the current that will pull you over to Racetracks, when entering directly out of the cave. Alternatively go to the left once you reach the bottom of the stairs and reach Suluban beach where you can easily paddle out to Temples.
EXIT
When exiting the surfing during high tide the reef will be completely covered, however the water would surge in and out and hit the cliff walls, therefore exiting can be dangerous if your timing is not correct. Come in from well up the reef making sure you are not washed up past the entrance to the cave. If you miss it you have 2 options: either you can take a long paddle all the way down to Padang Padang with an even longer walk back to Uluwatu. Or Paddle back out, wide of the lineup where the current is weak and have a second go.
TIDES
A huge plus to having these 5 peaks making up Uluwatu's Surf spots is that at least 1 out of 5 peaks will be working well at any time of the day. When it is high tide, the wave becomes slower and more mellow, this is the time that a lot of the surrounding surf schools will pick to bring the less experienced surfers out for their sessions. Therefore, at high tide these spots can be crowded with beginners and intermediates. During low tide, the waves get fast and hollow which will produce the perfect waves for your more seasoned surfers. When Uluwatu has small swell the line ups can be crowded. However, once the surf reaches 6 foot plus, the crowds tend to minimize and your more experienced surfers come out.

WHAT IS THE BEACH LIKE?

If you want to reach the iconic Uluwatu cave, where you can paddle out to the main peak, it will start with zigzagging down the cliff face, past many local warungs and western restaurants until you reach the white sands beaches of suluban beach. The white sand and clear waters make this a great spot to admire Uluwatu’s Surf Spots. In the Uluwatu area we have Padang Padang which produces epic barreling waves and a stunning beach lined by scenic limestone cliffs, the beach where Eat, Pray, Love was filmed. For more quiet charming beaches, the shorelines of Thomas Beach and Bingin Beach also feature clear waters and white sand away from the bustling crowds, making them a perfect spot to read in peace.
