Uluwatu is the surfer’s mecca in Bali because it has the unique ability to handle many different swell sizes. Uluwatu is a wide reef, with many sandy beaches lining the stunning limestone cliffs. Uluwatu's Surf Spots are made up from 5 different peaks that work at different tides and offering rides that stretch up to 300 meters or more! The 5 peaks are all left hander waves breaking along the reefs, however there are some variations in the spots that emerge from different swell and swell sizes. Let’s explore the 5 peaks that make up Uluwatu’s Surf Spots.
If you want to reach the iconic Uluwatu cave, where you can paddle out to the main peak, it will start with zigzagging down the cliff face, past many local warungs and western restaurants until you reach the white sands beaches of suluban beach. The white sand and clear waters make this a great spot to admire Uluwatu’s Surf Spots. In the Uluwatu area we have Padang Padang which produces epic barreling waves and a stunning beach lined by scenic limestone cliffs, the beach where Eat, Pray, Love was filmed. For more quiet charming beaches, the shorelines of Thomas Beach and Bingin Beach also feature clear waters and white sand away from the bustling crowds, making them a perfect spot to read in peace.
This Surf Spot in Uluwatu is the furthest peak as it is the furthest up the line up to the south of the Peninsula. It’s a reef break, and a left hander and is the least crowded of Uluwatu’s Surf Spots as the paddle to the line up is far.
The peak is the most consistent wave compared to the other 5 Uluwatu Surf Spots. It is located just out from the cave and Suluban Beach and it picks up lots of swells and features shifty peaks which have multiple spots where the wave breaks over the reef.
The bombie peak is situated right out at the back and is most exposed Surf Spot in Uluwatu to the large ocean swell. Bombie only works at high tides and when the swell is big. Bombie is known as one of the biggest waves that can be ridden in Indonesia.
The last section along Uluwatu’s Surf Spots is Racetracks. This peak starts to the right as one exits the cave, it wraps around the cliff face corner to Padang Padang. Racetracks work best at low tide, however, be careful as it can get super shallow on a sharp reef. Racetracks produces super long rides and, on some days, there are epic barrels!
Outside corner is Uluwatu’s most iconic peak. Outside Corner is only to be surfed by experienced surfers it is also a great spot to watch the pros rip. Outside Corner is Uluwatu's surf spots most challenging peak. Outside Corner works at Low tide and on big swells.
