HAZARDS TO BE AWARE OF:

HAZARDS TO BE AWARE OF:

CROWDS
Canggu is a popular surf destination because there is a consistent year round swell so spots may get crowded. Surf spots including Pererenan, Echo Beach and Sandbar draw a lot of experienced surfers, due to the good quality of the waves. To maintain respect just remember to practise proper surf etiquette. Pererenan has a punchy right and a more mellow left which helps disperse the crowds in the line up. Batu Bolong has a white wash Inside section for beginners and a section out back for beginner surfers looking to turn, again this disperses the crowd. Additionally, Old Man's features multiple take off zones rather than just one peak, which helps disperse the crowd and facilitates wave catching.
ENTRY
Canggu Surf Spots have channels to the left or right of the line up for an easy paddle to reach the line up. Watch for boils on lower tides when you're paddling. Underwater boulders that could easily ding your board or fins are usually indicated by this. On calm days you can paddle out through the impact zone at Old Man's, but if the tide is high you can paddle out through the channel to the right.
TIDES
Old man's and Batu Bolong work at all tides, but work best at mid to high tide when the waves are smoother and more forgiving. Pererenan, Echo Beach and Sandbar work best at mid to low tide, producing cleaner and more powerful waves, but watch out for shallow reef sections at low tide.
Hazards
Some surf hazards to be aware of at Pererenan left is an exposed reef section which can appear suddenly. If you don't make the drop it's easy to hit the uneven bottom. There are some uneven reef sections here that you should be aware of. When the sandbar is working it can become hollow creating a shallow sand bottom and a very hefty lip. Echo Beach has a lot of exposed, sharp reef on low tide so be extra cautious here. When the surf gets head-high Batu Bolong can create some current in the waterway which can be challenging for you if you struggle with paddling. Old Man’s will throw a soft top boards and longboards your way so keep your eyes peeled on the paddle back out to the line up and always be aware of where you are in the water.

WHAT IS THE BEACH LIKE?

Canggu's beaches are characterised by long lengths of black sand that contrast beautifully with the ocean. Locals and tourists gather at the beach bars that line Echo Beach, Batu Bolong and all the way down to Berawa at dusk to have Bintangs while taking in the colourful sunsets. Although there may be some garbage and crowds on the beaches at the busiest times of the year, the vibrant atmosphere and stunning scenery make the trip worthwhile.

Surf Spots

ECHO BEACH SURF BREAK

Echo Beach produces a powerful left hand wave which breaks over a shallow reef and with a good swell it can be quite heavy and produce barrels. This spot is for upper intermediate to advanced surfers as the line up can be competitive so surf etiquette is a must. On a higher tide when it’s not barrelling it can produce a powerful wall to rip some turns.

PERERENAN SURF BREAK

For intermediate to advanced surfers, Pererenan is a vibrant surf location in Canggu that offers a variety of difficult and gentler waves. Generally more laid-back, the left-hand break at the river mouth offers longer, cruisy rides that are ideal for practicing your cut backs. The right-hand break, on the other hand, is steeper and faster, with hollow parts that can produce barrels and hollower waves. The reef-and-sandbar combination of the break makes it shifty, mixed with the current from the river it can be tricky to hold your position which is why the right is more advanced, with quick takeoffs and hollow, barreling sections. Depending on the conditions, advanced surfers can enjoy both barrel rides and technical manoeuvres on this range of waves.

SANDBAR SURF BREAK

Sandbar is for advanced surfers who want to push themselves because of its steep, strong waves. This is a beach break producing A-frame waves, which are steep, punchy and less room for error. This produces great sections where surfers can perform big turns and advanced aerial manoeuvres. Sandbar breaks quickly and can get hollow. Sandbar has powerful sections which are ideal for surfers looking to generate some serious speed, and it has shallower sections that create ideal sections for barrels. It’s a spot where you’ll need quick reflexes and solid technique to take full advantage of the waves, making it a favourite for surfers looking to elevate their game. Sandbar is an exhilarating and rewarding spot in Canggu for advanced surfers.
