The essential surfing equipment: everything you need to surf

If you want to enjoy and be connected with nature, you have almost everything you need to get into the water. But besides a board, fins and a leash there are some more essentials you might need to surf. To be well prepared and also save you some embarrassment of returning to the beach in nothing but your birthday suit, we're gonna give you an overview of the necessary surfing gear.

The essential surfing equipment: everything you need to surf

From bikini to wetsuit: what you should have in your surf-wardrobe

Bikini / Swimsuit: Of course, a bikini is the basic surf wear you definitely need. But not every bikini is best suited for going surfing. You need to make sure to pick a good one that could endure an epic wipeout without getting out of place. The best bikini tops are usually the ones that have a cross back and are very similar to sports bras. When it comes to the bottoms the matter is the tighter the better. If you’re sick of bikinis, then getting yourself a full-piece suit can work wonders. Using a long sleeve full piece is also a good idea if you’re looking to protect yourself from the sun during the day! It looks stylish and you’re being smart about the sun.

Boardshorts: What the bikini and swimsuits are for girls, boardshorts are for guys. There are specific boardshorts models for surfers with quick-drying, stitchless and stretch fabrics. If the weather conditions allow, all you need is a surfboard and a pair of surf trunks.

Rash Guard & Surf leggings: Rash guard and surf leggings are other things to consider having in your wardrobe. They might not look really stylish but are truly game changers. First, they are helpful if you have a sunburn on your body or to prevent one. Second, they will help you stop scraping your skin on your board. Alternatively, you can also wear a t-shirt instead of a rash guard.

Surf Poncho: The specially-designed robe replaces a towel and complicated aerobic routines and makes it pretty easy to change in and out of your bikini or board shorts.

Surf Booties: Some surfers complain that they look kooky, but they also have their reason for existence. Most surfers wear them to stay in cold waters. Here in Bali, they wouldn’t be necessary but they also help you to get you in and out across the reef! If you are staying with us you can buy your own Rip Curl Surf Booties directly in our camps.

Sun protection and other helpful gadgets

Sunscreen & Zinc: You've probably seen this a lot: surfers whose faces are rubbed with white, green or even blue paste aka zinc. Zinc oxide reflects and scatters UV radiation, making it a highly effective sun protectant to prevent sunburn. Together with a high-protection-factor sunscreen, it’s one of your must-haves when going surfing.

Earplugs: A lot of surfers struggle with the so-called surfer‘s ear - an infection that comes from the rapid reproduction of bacteria. By using earplugs while surfing you can keep bacteria out of the delicate ear canal and therefore prevent an infection.

Wax is necessary for giving you the grip that keeps you from slipping off the surfboard when paddling and riding the wave.

Surf Watch: Not a must-have but a nice gadget for keeping informed about the conditions. A surf watch provides you with a surf forecasting including wave height, wave period, wind speed and direction, and tide times for thousands of worldwide surf spots.

Because we want you to have the most amazing surf vacation we also sell some surfer gear directly in our camps. We offer you surf booties, surfer hats to protect your head from the sun, wax and wax combs, surf earplugs, zinc and fin keys.
