Even though most of the waves in the Mentawais are no joke, the islands provide a fantastic opportunity for beginner surfers to learn and progress in a stunning, tropical setting. Spots like Nyang Nyang and Playgrounds offer gentle, forgiving waves perfect for learning the basics. These locations often have sandy bottoms, making them ideal for beginners to learn how to surf, practise their pop-ups, take-offs, and ride the waves without worrying about sharp coral reefs. Here are some beginner-friendly surf spots in the Mentawais:
Tikus
For those new to surfing or looking for a more mellow wave, and a cruisy session, Tikus is an excellent choice. Located on North Sipora, this mellow wave offers gentle, rolling waves that are perfect for beginners to practise their pop-ups, take-offs, and wave riding. The sandy bottom provides a soft landing, making it a safe and forgiving environment to learn.
Tikus is also often less crowded than other popular surf spots in the Mentawais. Whether you're taking your first surf lesson or looking to improve your skills, Tikus is a great place to start.
Playgrounds
Playground Left and Right (also known as Karangbat Left or Karamba) both offer a long, easy wave ideal for longboarders and beginners. When the swell is up, a right-hander splits off the peak. Expect smooth, predictable lefts during mid-tide, staying below chest high. It’s a great surf spot to catch some waves while getting ready for the bigger waves of the Mentawais.
Beng Bengs
Another perfect spot for beginners to ease into the Mentawais surf scene is Beng Bengs. Located within beautiful surroundings and protected from southerly winds, Beng Bengs is a reliable long lefthander which breaks over deep and forgiving reefs and provides super fun surfing conditions. It doesn't matter if the waves are big or small, it’s always worth a look since it’s a really consistent wave.
Nyang Nyang
Nyang Nyang is a picturesque beach break located on the southern tip of Sipora Island. This beginner-friendly spot offers gentle, rolling waves. The sandy bottom and gradual slope make it ideal for surfers of all levels. When the swell is small, Nyang Nyang provides a fun, mellow wave. However, during larger swells, the wave can become more powerful and challenging, making it suitable for intermediate surfers as well.

Lance’s Right / Hollow Tree
A true surfer's dream, Lance's Right in South Sipora is recognized as one of the best and most consistent fast, barreling right-handers in the world. It’s known for its long, powerful, and perfectly shaped right-hand waves. The wave's fast, barreling sections and shallow inside make it a challenging yet rewarding experience for intermediate to advanced surfers. To truly appreciate Lance's Right, you need to time your surf session with the right swell and tide. When the conditions are perfect, the wave offers long, drawn-out rides and deep, hollow barrels. With its picturesque setting and world-class surf, Lance's Right is also a photographer's paradise.
Macaroni’s
Macaroni's is a legendary wave in the Mentawai Islands, renowned for its powerful, hollow left-handers. In 2003, it was even voted the world's best wave by a panel of surfing experts from Waves Magazine!
This world-class break is a dream for experienced surfers, offering steep faces, deep barrels, and intense power. But beware, Macaroni's can be a beast, especially during big swells. Only experienced surfers should attempt to tackle this wave.
A Frames
Another challenging but great surf spot is A-Frames. Situated in front of a beautiful tropical island, this spot is known for its powerful, breaking waves on both sides. This iconic wave offers a variety of peaks, from challenging, shifting sections to more forgiving, playful walls. However, the shifting nature of the wave and its powerful conditions make it a challenge even for experienced surfers.
Telescopes
Telescope is a world-class left-hander located on North Sipora. This is one of the crown jewels of The Mentawais and also known for its powerful, long, and hollow waves. Whether it's a small, playful or a massive, barreling beast, Telescope always delivers. It offers a variety of sections, from the steep, hollow takeoff to the playful inside section. Even when the swell is smaller, Telescope provides fun and rideable waves.
Surf Spots for Advanced
The Mentawai Islands are a mecca for advanced surfers, with a lot of consistent world-class waves where they can test their skills and have fun. Powerful, hollow waves offer thrilling rides and unforgettable experiences. For those seeking the ultimate challenge, spots like these provide high-performance waves that will push even the most experienced surfers to their limits!
Pit Stops
Pit Stops is another world-class wave in the Mentawai Islands, offering powerful, hollow waves that are perfect for experienced surfers. This wave is known for its steep face and deep barrels, making it a thrilling ride. However, it's important to note that Pit Stop can be dangerous, especially during large swells. Only experienced surfers and real daredevils should attempt to surf this wave.
E-Bay
Right next to Pit Stop is Emerald Bay, a perfect, consistent, hollow left-hander that breaks over a shallow reef. When it's on, Emerald Bay offers long, powerful rides and deep barrels. The wave's steep face and powerful sections make it a favourite among surfers. It's a truly world-class wave that's worth the wait!
No Kandui
Accessible only by boat, NoKandui offers one of the most challenging waves in Mentawai. It’s a ferociously tubing lefthander, and also one of the most famed breaks.
When the conditions are right, pros flock to the wave from around the world, and the slew of video clips that usually surface in the aftermath of these swell events are nothing short of insane. One of the most iconic clips to come out of a NoKandui session features a severely under gunned Craig Anderson battling with an absolute beast and somehow prevailing. NoKandui can be found on a small islet just south of Masokut.
