On August 17th the whole of Indonesia celebrates the day that Indonesia gained independence in 1945. The proclamation, read by Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta in Jakarta, marked the beginning of Indonesia's journey as an independent nation. While the road to full international recognition continued for several years, 17 August remains one of the country's most important dates.
The history is important, but what makes the day truly special is how it is celebrated.
It’s not centered around large commercial events nor city festivals, it is rooted in local communities and gathering all together. The streets are completely filled with red and white flags, neighbours organise traditional games to play with the community of their villages and most importantly, family and friends spend the day together.

The spirit of ‘Merdeka!’

“Merdeka!”
This means ‘freedom’ or ‘independence’ and is shouted during traditional games, printed on banners and hung in the streets. This word reflects a shared identity, a word that unifies and appreciates the country's struggle to reach independence.

On the 17th communities come together and the kids compete in sack races, teenagers organise games, elders prepare food to share and one of the best-known traditions is Panjat Pinang, where people get into teams and work together to climb to the top of a greased pole, to reach a prize at the top. Its super fun to watch but it represents that success is achieved through teamwork.
