Riding waves all day places a lot of physical demands on the body. Dipping into a freezing pool of water afterwards sounds like complete madness. However, there is a method to this madness, as this has many health benefits. What we are talking about is the so-called Cold Adaptation Therapy, usually practiced by Ice Bathing. An ice bath is the ideal recovery tool for surfers. It is a tub filled with water and large ice cubes or simply cooled to a specific temperature. Typically, the water temperature ranges from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.
Once an Ice Bath has reached the desired temperature, a person will typically submerge their entire body from shoulders down into the icy water, for a set duration, often around 10 to 20 minutes. While the initial shock can be intense, athletes swear by this recovery method to aid recovery after intense physical activity, as the cold temperature helps reduce inflammation, muscle soreness, and fatigue.
When you submerge your body in cold water, your body has a natural response that boosts circulation, flushing out toxins and delivering oxygen and nutrients to your muscles more efficiently. This process reduces inflammation and swelling, making it a great recovery tool for many athletes who need to reduce stiffness quickly which can help you prevent common surf injuries. Ice Baths are also beneficial for your Central Nervous System, aiding sleep and reducing fatigue. Additionally, they can boost your metabolism, as the cold water exposure activates brown fat tissue and helps it metabolize faster. Ice Baths support heart health and calm irritated skin.
While Ice Baths are a fantastic physical recovery tool, they also offer many mental benefits. The initial shock of the polar plunge elevates your mood and increases resilience. Cold water exposure stimulates the release of endorphins and adrenaline, improving your overall mood. After a chilly dip, you may feel more active, alert, and attentive. The cold exposure also decreases stress.
After a surf session, your body is often left aching from paddling, wipeouts and the tension of balancing on your board while riding the waves. An Ice Bath can be a game changer, reducing sore muscles and joints, reducing fatigue, and speeding up recovery so that you can get back to surfing in no time! Furthermore, Ice Baths enhance your body’s ability to adapt to temperature changes, which is beneficial when it comes to surfing in cold waters. The heightened alertness and focus you gain from exposure to the cold prove to be beneficial when catching waves.
So, when you’ve surfed some of Sri Lanka’s epic waves and live the Eat, Sleep, Surf Lifestyle, consider taking a chilly soak in our ice bath. Your body (and your next surf session) will be grateful!

Ice Baths have some interesting science behind why they are such a beneficial recovery tool! When you fully place your body in cold water several physiological responses occur that enhance recovery, the initial shock experienced when you polar plunge constricts the blood vessels, which reduces the blood flow to the muscles which minimizes inflammation and swelling. The constriction of the blood vessels also aids in flushing out metabolic waste products such as lactic acid which causes post-exercise soreness and stiffness and therefore you can return to optimal performance faster.
Once you exit the Ice Bath your body naturally begins to heat up again, and physiologically your body will respond by dilating the blood vessels, which increases the blood flow to your muscles, this increase in circulation delivers fresh, oxygen-rich blood to the muscles, promoting healing and recovery. Additionally, cold water exposure increases the release of endorphins which is a natural pain reliever, and also boosts your overall mood which is great for a physical and mental recovery tool after an intense surf session.
Ice baths also activate our Vagus Nerve, which is critical for regulating our Nervous System and managing our stress levels. Activation of the Vagus Nerve reduces our stress levels and increases our alertness and mental clarity. The science of the Ice bath reveals a powerful combination of physical and psychological benefits, making it a popular recovery strategy among surfers.
If it's your first time trying an Ice Bath and you want to get used to the water temperatures first, keep your chest, neck and head above the water. This keeps your heart out of the water and stops your body temperature from dropping quickly. Once you're used to using ice baths you can begin to submerge your body further. In theory, it is recommended that the time you are in your ice bath matches the water temperature. If the water is 10 degrees Celsius you can Ice Bath for 10 minutes or if the water is 15 degrees Celsius, you can Ice Bath for 15 minutes. 2 or 3 Ice Baths are recommended weekly to experience the benefits and to be in good condition to fully experience the benefits of surfing.
