Surf Smarter, Not Harder – With Kima Surf Bali

Learning to surf in Bali is one of the most exciting and thrilling things you can experience. But like anything new, it comes with its fair share of tumbles, wipeouts and lessons learned the hard way. At Kima Surf, we’ve helped thousands of first-time surfers find their feet and ride their first waves. Along the way, we’ve seen some classic beginner mistakes pop up time and time again. The good news is most of them are super easy to avoid with a bit of awareness and the right coaching.

Let’s dive into the most common beginner surf mistakes and how you can skip them on your journey to becoming a confident, ocean-loving wave rider.

Mistake #1: Underestimating the Ocean

Just because the water looks calm doesn’t mean it’s safe. Conditions can change in an instant, with shifting swells, hidden rips, and fast-moving tides creating serious hazards. That’s why it’s crucial to always check the surf report, understand the local break, and never paddle out without knowing what you're getting into.

Starting your surfing adventure on mild, beginner-friendly waves, such as those found close to our camps in Seminyak or Canggu, is crucial. Learn how to read the ocean, the tides, the effects of wind on waves, and the locations of safe entry and exit points.

At Kima, we build all of this into our coaching, so you’ll learn to understand the ocean just as much as you learn to ride it. Respecting the sea isn’t just about safety—it’s the foundation of being a good surfer.

Mistake #2: Overestimating Your Ability

While everyone aspires to pull into a perfect barrel or catch large, ripping waves, surfing for beginners is about gradually gaining confidence. Trying to surf waves that are too difficult or using a board that is too small, too soon, are two of the most frequent mistakes. You'll have a lot more fun and make more progress on a soft-top or longboard at first, even though riding a shortboard can feel cooler.

Being a beginner is not a source of shame; investing the time to master the fundamentals, such as powerful paddling technique, a fluid pop-up, and a balanced stance, positions you for long-term success.

Mistake #3: Not Knowing Surf Etiquette

Surfing comes with a unique set of rules that help keep things safe and respectful in the water, many beginners don’t even realise these rules exist until they’ve accidentally broken one. Things like dropping in on someone’s wave, paddling through the lineup, or not waiting your turn can upset the flow and lead to uncomfortable situations.

The best way to learn surf etiquette is by observing more experienced surfers and asking questions, our surf guides will walk you through all of it, from how to navigate the lineup to when it’s your turn to catch a wave. Understanding the surf etiquette helps you feel more confident, stay safe and be a respectful part of the surf community. At Kima, we believe good vibes in the water start with knowledge and respect.

Mistake #4: Looking Down While Surfing

This is a big one and something we remind people every day, when you first stand up on a board, the natural instinct is to look down at your feet or the board, but here’s the trick, where your eyes go, your body follows. If you’re staring down, you’re more likely to lose your balance and fall off.

Instead, try to keep your eyes focused on where you want to go down the wave, toward the beach, or toward the next section. Looking ahead helps with balance, positioning and overall flow, the more you train yourself to stay upright and focused forward, the quicker your surfing improves. It might feel strange at first, but it makes a massive difference once it clicks.

Mistake #5: Skipping Warm-Up and Stretching

Surfing looks effortless, but it’s a seriously physical sport, paddling out, popping up and riding waves all demand strength, balance and mobility. A common mistake among beginners is heading straight into the surf without warming up, which can lead to stiff muscles, poor performance, or even injury.

Taking five to ten minutes to warm up on the beach can completely change your session. Start with some light movement to get your heart rate up and follow that with stretches that focus on your shoulders, hips and back. At Kima, every surf session begins with a guided warm-up to get your body and mind ready for the waves. Trust us, your body will thank you, and you’ll feel way more fluid and focused once you're in the water.
