Behind the scenes of a Rising Surf Star
At the young age of 20 years old Bronson is known as Indonesia’s rising surf star, and he sealed the deal on the 18th of January when he won the WSL Junior Championship, making him one of the best junior surfers in the world! Born and raised surfing the shorelines of Sumbawa, Indonesia, Bronson has been smashing the surf from the young age of 4 years old. He is well known for his fluid style, and he is making a profound mark in both competitive and free surfing.
In celebration of Bronson’s epic victory, we want to share an exclusive interview with the rising surf legend where we share the behind-the-scenes intel on his life as a professional surfer, his surfing journey, his challenges and more interesting content. Read on to be inspired by this young surfer’s journey and he is only just getting started!
#1 When did you start surfing and who taught you?
“I started surfing when I was around 4/5 years old, my mentor were all my friends because I grew up in Lakey super close to my friends and to the beach, whenever they were out there in the water, I would always see them, and they got me into surfing.”
#2 Who were your biggest influences and inspirations when you started surfing and now?
“My biggest inspiration when I started surfing was all my friends and my dad as he would surf at the time also, and they would give me a lot of motivation to go out there and I think now my inspiration is John John, because he is just one of the best, maybe the best.”
#3 What board size and brand are you surfing?
“I am riding a JS surfboard, 5’10 and 5’11, not too big and not too small. JS is the best boards.”
#4 What is your favourite surf spot in Bali?
“My favourite surf spot in Bali is Keramas, it is always good and always has ramps there.”
#5 Can you share a memorable experience or highlight from your surfing journey?
“A highlight is when I got my best barrel ever on my trip to Mentawai Island with Redbull in 2023.”
#6 What has been the most challenging moment in your surfing career so far, and how did you overcome it?
“When I got a surf injury and tore my ACL, two years have passed now since then but it took me almost 6 months to recover and at the time I was so bummed, and I didn’t know what to do with myself. All I could do was train and hope it would get better.“
#7 What does a typical day look like for you, both in and out of the water?
“I wake up and do the usual, load up the car, go for a drive, get a coffee and go have a look at the waves, go surf, come in and eat and then sometimes we have training and sometimes we don’t, so it just depends on the scheduled training days.”
#8 What are some of your other hobbies outside of surfing?
“My other hobbies are video games, and basketball but I haven’t played in a long time.”
#9 What is your favourite after-surf meal?
“It will have to be Oakberry, because it is nice and cold after a surf, and this is Bali, so it is hot.”
#10 How do you stay motivated and focused during tough times or when facing big waves?
“When I am facing big waves and I get scared or nervous, I just take a moment to visualise everything, what is going on and what everybody is doing and just try to be safe when I am out there.”
#11 What are your 3 top tips for beginner surfers and surfers in general?
“My top tip is respect everybody around you, follow the correct surf etiquette and no snaking, secondly, just take your time with surfing, don’t rush anything and just surf slowly but surely, everything takes time and number three don’t rush changing your board size to a smaller size as we see this a lot, people on smaller boards and they are not ready, go with what fits you and take your time.”
#12 What are your goals and dreams for the future, both in surfing and beyond?
“My dreams for the future is to qualify for the Championship tour, win a championship, I want to have something else outside of the water I am not sure yet but lets see.“
