What makes a wave beginner-friendly?

Before we look into all of Uluwatu’s surf spots and decide whether it's a good destination for beginners, we first need to decide what makes a wave beginner-friendly. Beginner-friendly surf spots have the following conditions, making them more forgiving:

  • Soft and mellow waves: The waves at these spots break slowly and predictably.

  • Beach breaks: The surface below is sandy and not rocky or reef, this makes wipeouts more forgiving.

  • Small waves: The waves should be small and have a forgiving take off so that beginners feel safe and calm.

  • A clear channel: Having a distinct channel, where you can paddle back out to the lineup easily, and without any waves or currents.

  • Less crowded lineups: Surfing with fewer surfers in the water is ideal for those learning to surf, as there are less distractions and potential obstructions.

These are the conditions that provide a safe and forgiving learning environment for beginner surfers, and this makes a surf spot beginner-friendly.

Is Uluwatu beginner-friendly?

In short, Uluwatu itself, which consists of 5 main peaks, is not friendly for true beginners. There are spots between these 5 main peaks and beyond that are beginner-friendly, and in this blog we will share those spots with you!

Uluwatu consists of 5 main peaks, known as Bombie, The Peak, Racetracks, Outside Corner and Temples and these spots are world-class. These spots are known as powerful reef breaks with fast sections and the occasional hollow barrel. These spots are for the seasoned pros hunting the barrel of a lifetime.

With all of that said, Uluwatu is not only for the seasoned pros. On smaller swells and higher tides certain spots provide great conditions for beginner and intermediate surfers. The good news? Many beginner-friendly spots are located in the Bukit area, with many mellow waves located a short drive away.

Thomas Beach

Surf spot location: Thomas beach is located just north of Padang Padang, it is a bit more difficult to access this beach, as there is a long staircase down to the beach, but this keeps the crowd levels low, which is great.

When is the wave beginner-friendly? Thomas Beach works best on a mid to high tide and a small to medium swell, this is when the wave breaks uniformly along the reef, perfect for beginners looking to ride the wave straight to the beach.

What is the wave like? The waves at Thomas Beach are perfect for beginners looking to practice some fundamentals, like popping up, and keeping their balance on the white wash. The waves are soft and playful with an easy paddle‑out. It’s one of the most approachable places in the Uluwatu area for beginners.

Hazards: At low tide the reef can become a bit exposed and there are occasional currents—best surfed with guidance if you’re new to the ocean.

What is the wave like? Consistent whitewater waves on the inside sections, at lower tides for learning plus clean green waves for progressing beginners.

Hazards: Can become powerful and closing‑out when the swell rises, and rips may appear – Conditions need to be chosen carefully.

Surf spot location: Directly in front of the famous Eat, Pray, Love Beach, Padang Padang, you will find a mellow wave known as Baby Padang.

When is the wave beginner-friendly? The best beginner-friendly conditions will be found here on smaller swells and from a mid to high tide. This is when there are slow, right peeling waves, ideal for beginners.

What is the wave like? Long, mellow waves with a predictable shape, a calm take‑off zone, and a supportive learning environment. It’s widely considered one of the best transition waves in Bali for surfers moving from whitewater to clean, unbroken waves.
