Improve Your Surfing Skills with Kima Surf Camps

Take Your Surfing to the Next Level

So you can paddle out to the lineup, find your position and catch your own waves. Maybe you can link your turns, handle bigger waves, and surf alone confidently. So if you already know how to surf, why would you need a surf camp?

The answer is straightforward: You can always surf better.

At Kima Surf Camps our aim is to help surfers at different levels get more out of every session, this can be improving your technique, understanding the waves, challenging yourself in new conditions or simply discovering the best breaks for your ability.

The next question is, what can Kima do for your surfing? Well, quite a lot.

First, we match you with the right waves

At Kima, we have a custom six star session planner to match surfers with the right waves for their ability. This session planner helps us to keep the surf sessions small and intimate, so the guide to guest ratio is 2:1. The planner also ensures that our surfers are surfing the surf spots that match their level. Here is a short summary of the surf planner:

  • 1 Star: Complete beginner — learning the basics and getting comfortable in the water.

  • 2 Stars: Beginner — catching small waves and starting to build confidence.

  • 3 Stars: Advanced beginner — confidently catching green waves without a push and working on basic turns.

  • 4 Stars: Intermediate — surfing independently, linking turns and handling a wider range of conditions.

  • 5 Stars: Advanced — comfortable in more powerful waves, with strong technique and wave knowledge.

  • 6 Stars: Expert — highly experienced surfers confident in challenging conditions, powerful waves and demanding reef breaks.

And if you're sitting somewhere between 3 and 6 Stars, you already know how to surf — but we've still got you covered.

This is where Kima becomes less about learning how to surf and more about helping you surf better.

How can a surf camp help you?

1. Improve your technique

Once you have learnt the basics, progression is in the small details. Intermediate surfers are often trying to perform better turns, generate more speed, have smarter positioning, and surf more confidently when the swell gets bigger.

At Kima Surf Camps our surf guides will give you practical feedback in and out of the water, while video analysis helps you see how you surf and identify areas for improvement. Reviewing your waves with our team is one of the best ways to improve and it makes it easier to spot what you're doing well and what you can work on in your next session.

We also offer surf theory classes, helping you better understand wave selection, positioning, tides, swell and conditions.

2. Find the right waves with local knowledge

Sure you can check Surfline and look at a map, but nothing beats local knowledge.

Our surf guides bring decades of experience surfing the surf spots around Bali and Sri Lanka. Many have grown up surfing these coastlines and learning how the waves change with every tide, swell and wind direction.

That means you're getting more than a surf guide pointing you towards a break. You're getting someone who knows the waves inside out — and can help you understand where to go based on your level, the conditions and what you want to work on.

Instead of asking “Where's good today?”, we can help answer: “Where's good for me today?”

3. Try better boards

At Kima we have our Premium Surfboard Collection, which is our personal quiver of performance boards from top surfing brands like KT Surfing, Aipa, Gerry Lopez, Woo and more! Once you start to improve, the board under your feet matters.

Try different shapes and sizes to find the board that works for the conditions — without dragging an entire quiver halfway around the world.

The right board can change how you generate speed, approach a turn and handle a wave. So why not use your surf trip to try something new?

4. Challenge yourself to something new

We have all heard the saying ‘good things come from being out of your comfort zone’, this applies in the world of surfing too! Progression comes from trading out a familiar spot for something more challenging.

Our guides can help introduce you to waves that challenge your surfing without putting you in conditions beyond your ability.

Our Kima surf boat in Bali can take our intermediate surfers to the outer reefs, like Airports left and Serangan.

And if you’re staying at Kima Uluwatu, you’re right in the middle of one of Bali’s most famous surf regions. The Bukit Peninsula is packed with reef breaks offering everything from long walls and fast sections to powerful barrels.

With so many different waves within reach, you can work on different parts of your surfing and gradually push yourself into new conditions.

5. Make friends and let us handle the rest!

No matter what level your surfing is at, the best part of the surf trip is often the people you share it with!

Staying at Kima means meeting surfers from around the world, paddling out together, comparing waves over breakfast, watching each other’s footage and planning tomorrow’s sessions. But it also means having everything covered:

And more!

This means you can focus on surfing and pushing your levels with all the logistics taken care of by our experienced surf department.
